Tiivistelmä
Lapsen oikeuksien sopimuksella pyritään takaamaan jokaiselle lapselle oikeus kasvaa omaksi itsekseen.
The aim of the Convention on the rights of the Child is to guarantee every child a right to grow to be him/herself. Nowadays more and more young people experience discrimination in the school and outside of it. The discrimination can affect harmfully on the image of yourself, other people and the surrounding world. This can cause the self-esteem to decrease and the distortions of the sel-consept which may lead to appearance pressure. To the young person the own changing physical appearance and the matters which are related to it, can be delicate or even difficult subjects.
The thesis was carried out as a functional thesis with the purpose of to design and to carry out a functional stand to the seventh graders of the middle schools of Turku at #MeTurku – event on Children’s rights day. In the event the focus was to concentrate on the young seventh grader’s own streghts by thinking about the advantages of their own body or their physical appearance. During the three hour event 106 young people visited the stand in small groups and writed down the best quality of their physical appearance in a Post-It not and clued it in the poster on a wall.
The objective of the stand was to strengthen the self-esteem and self-concept of the young people by thinking about their own strengths and offer them information about their own rights as children. For the evaluation purposes of the stand, some were asked to give feedback on a fluency, the importance of the subject and the display of the stand. The ones who gave feedback thought the subject was worth thinking of because the matter is too seldom thought. Furthermore, the students thought that too often one tends to concentrate more on the bad than good and strong sides.
