-toimintamalli.
In 2015–16, a record number of unaccompanied minor asylum seekers arrived in Finland. After being granted a residence permit and a placement in a municipality, these children and young people were transferred from reception units to family group homes all over Finland. Over a short period of time, dozens of units were established which had little or no experience of raising and caring for unaccompanied minor asylum seekers.
This thesis represents a development project to improve the quality of personal support workers’ work in family group homes. It is part of the TUKENA project of the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment for Uusimaa and SOS Children’s Village and has been used to develop the operations models of family group homes.
The operations model SUPPORTED BY A PERSONAL SUPPORT WORKER was created as a result of the development project. It is designed for the development of both manage-ment work and the work of personal support workers in family group homes and can be adapted to develop various skills needed in them.
During the development project, five support workers from family group homes were guided and supported in their implementation of systematic personal supervision. In addition, the project strengthened their professional understanding of the therapeutic value and effects of systematic care and educational work in the lives of unaccompanied children and young people.
During the development project, a literature review was carried out, a pilot group consisting of support workers were interviewed and feedback was received from them concerning the days they received instruction.
The most essential part was piloting the UMBRELLA workbook method as part of the work of personal support workers in family group homes. The five family group homes that participated in the development project operate in the area of the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment for Uusimaa.
