The aim of the project was to find out whether the control of the outdoor defrosting system could be implemented energy-efficiently and reliably on the basis of a weather forecast. The work was limited to the defrosting of the outdoor area with a heating cable, the purpose of which was to prevent the formation of dangerously slippery conditions for pedestrians and to increase the comfort in the outdoor areas.
The knowledge base required for the implementation of a weather forecast control system was examined including the structures of defrosting systems, typical winter conditions, the Finnish Meteorological Institute's open data and the calculations required for the control. The operating principles of a weather forecast control system and the requirements for the control equipment were designed based on the knowledge base.
The operation of the weather forecast control system was compared to conventional defrost thermostat control system in a field experiment in which the weather forecast controlled system consumed 55.5 % less energy than the defrost thermostat controlled system over a period of 18 days. Most of the energy savings were acquired during rainless frosty days. The proportion of rainless days in a typical winter is higher than in the field test, so the energy efficiency potential of the weather forecast control system was higher than that measured in the field test.
A defrost heating control system can be implemented energy efficiently based on the weather forecast. The control method is sufficiently reliable for many, but not all, applications. Based on the results of the field test, the operational reliability of the weather forecast control can be im-proved without compromising energy efficiency.
