This thesis researched children‘s experience of Soup and sympathy (Soppaa ja sympatiaa) project. In this project, client families of six kindergartens are offered dinner, activities and get-together. The purpose of this research was to listen to children‘s experiences and describe, what kind of things are important to them, what kind of knowledge children have about the actualization of their participation and time spent with their parent in the activities in the Soup and sympathy project. The goal of the research was to provide information about functionality of the project from children point of view. This way the principal may take into the consideration children ‘s experiences and view, when evaluating the project and possible needs to further develop the activity.
The thesis is a qualitative research, in which theme interview and drawing were used as methods. There were eight children to be interviewed, seven of which were 4–6 years old and one seven years old. The material was processed with content analysis based on the material.
According to the results the most important things for children are playing, having dinner and different activities like drawing. Children experienced their participation to be materialised well as individual and mutual among children and partially between the child and the parent. Together with its parent the children's experiences of the time spent included presence of the parent and different activities.
In the project, the important things for the children amplified the results from earlier researches concerning things experienced to be important by children. Their experiences of the participation realised were at the level expected considering the goals and the nature of the activities. The research shows that children of this age can produce knowledge, which is important to take into consideration in the future when enabling their involvement during the planning, evaluation and development phases concerning them.
