Under sjukhustiden genomlevde föräldrarna många olika känslor. The aim of this qualitative systematic review is to study parents’ experiences of having a sick newborn in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The research question in this thesis is: What experiences does parents of a sick newborn have in a NICU-ward?
Close collaboration with parents (VVM) was chosen as the theoretical framework because this model is especially developed for the neonatal intensive care. The articles that have been included in the study are academic and peer reviewed. The articles were found through searches in the databases CINAHL with Full Text, MEDLINE and Academic Search Elite. Inductive content analysis was used to analyze the material. The articles have been compiled in an article summary (Appendix 2) which is attached in the end of the study.
The result shows that many parents perceive comprehensive and honest information as important. Another highlight was the importance of good communication and interaction between parents and staff. During the hospitalization, the parents experienced many different feelings. It was essential for parents to be close to and comfort their child. According to the parents, participation was central to both them and their newborn. The parents found the support from the staff to be significant.
