The aim of the thesis was to find out how the people of Pori experience the nature, and what the well-being impacts of nature are. The work was commissioned by the city of Pori and its results will be utilized in the de-velopment of the city's welfare work. The well-being experiences of Pori residents and the use of various nature sites were mapped out in autumn 2019 by conducting an internet-based survey “My Nature Experiences”.
According to the results of this survey, the beauty and views of the land-scape have the greatest impact on recreation in nature. Besides, the ex-istence of routes, peace of nature, silence, the feel of the forest and na-ture, and biodiversity are also considered important. Natural environ-ments help people managing daily stress and influence their preferences on place of living, as well as Pori's reputation. It was hoped to have more nature areas, large parks and good routes and connections to the every-day environment. More information about nature sites is needed in many different forms. High-quality maintenance can significantly increase the use of natural environments.
As part of the thesis, Pori's recreational landscape areas have been iden-tified with the help of landscape structure analysis. The most used and favorite nature sites were concentrated in the Yyterinniemi dune area, pine ridges, rocky forests of archipelago and islets, and rolling forest and bog areas. The survey demonstrates that also green areas of the city cen-ter and the surrounding agglomeration are popular natural sites.
Wider natural objects that are easily accessible from the everyday envi-ronment and those located further away from the place of living both support people's well-being and everyday life. The introduction of new practices in the planning, implementation and maintenance of parks and recreation areas requires extensive and multidisciplinary cooperation as well as long-term strategic development at city level.
