Digitalization and digital nativity are allowing serious games to gain more footing in education than ever before. The term digital native describes a person who has grown up in the age of digital technology and thus has become familiar with modern digital tools by young age. Studies have shown that the use of serious games in education can often motivate young students to study more effectively than traditional teaching methods.
The goal of the thesis was to carry out research into serious games for children as well as to design and implement localization and optimization tools for the PELIMO project. The goal of the PELIMO project was to create a game to be used in multiculturalism education for 10–12-yearold children as a part of social studies. Furthermore, the tools had to be designed in a way that fits the best when it comes to serious games targeted at children. The commissioner of this thesis was theFirma, a learning environment of Turku University of Applied Sciences.
The game was created using Unity game engine and C# programming language and Google Sheets as localization tools. The theoretical section of the thesis contains research about serious games, localization, and optimization. The findings from the theoretical section were used to combine knowledge from these three subjects to create one working game.
The end results of the thesis were localization and optimization tools that fulfilled the original requirements for supporting the development of a serious game targeted at children. These tools will thus be utilized in the further development of the game project. The practical part of the thesis relies on the knowledge gained from theoretical part of the thesis to make the best decisions available.
