The purpose of this thesis is to find out how to make a physical store a place that supports the company’s business – what background factors and topics needs to be considered and what kind of project is needed in order to create a functional space, which evokes positive images in the company’s customers and other stakeholders in a way that it supports the company’s brand.
Source material for the thesis was accumulated from various books as well as online sources. A practical example of store design project was obtained by conducting two interviews relating to the same project. The project was a creation project of Paulig Kulma, which is a flagship created for Paulig’s coffee business Oy Gustav Paulig Ab. Paulig Kulma was opened in the center of Helsinki in 2016. Coffee Training & Café Expert Ella Takalainen was interviewed from Paulig. Paulig Kulma was created in collaboration with brand and experience design agency Bond Creative Agency, whose strategist Saku Nummi was also interviewed.
The thesis proceeds by first dealing with the theory accumulated from books and online sources. After that, Paulig Kulma project will be addressed through interviews. In the last chapter of the descriptions part, author of the thesis will plan store concept to her own store from a space perspective. In the end there is a summary and reflection chapter, where the thesis is analyzed as a project and learning experience by the author of the thesis.
The research done in the thesis revealed that a store can be a powerful tool, when the space has a genuine purpose and is built using a well-designed store concept. Store concept is a frame for the design of the retail space. Well planned store concept ensures that the store is designed from the right starting points, fulfills its purpose and serves the users of the space optimally. The store concept even defines space choices in detail.
