Finland should prepare more systematically for the ongoing change in the age structure. At the end of 2018, there were 60.8 persons under the age of 15 and those over the age of 65 per 100 employees in Finland. Therefore, restructuring of the service system is needed because the population dependency ratio described above, i.e. the number of children and pensioners in relation to the working age population, has changed.
The Acts on Supporting the Capacity of the Elderly Population and on the Social and Health Services of the Elderly oblige municipalities to take care of the well-being, health and functional capacity of older people and to support their independent performance. The aim of the thesis was to improve the preventive work for the elderly in the city of Äänekoski and to raise older people’s awareness of their own ability to act and take responsibility for their own health and well-being. The objective was to design, pilot and evaluate a preventive group-based functional capability measurement and well-being event for older people using the Precede-Proceed-model.
The output of the thesis was a well-being event for the elderly, in which functional capacity measurements were taken. A self-monitoring form for functional capacity was developed for the event, which recorded the results of the visitor's performance measurements. Based on the intervention and the feedback received, the older participants in the event were interested in their ability to function and considered the measurement of performance to be useful.
The pilot group intervention and the self-monitoring form are available in different contexts by selecting themes and metrics appropriate for the target group.
