Toimeksiantajana toimi Maskun neurologinen kuntoutuskeskus. Pakohuone on tarkoitettu neurologisesti vammautuneille/sairastuneille aikuisille kuntoutujille.
Escape rooms have become more common during the last few years. They are games in which the purpose is to get out of the room in a certain time by solving different tasks. Escape rooms can be classified into serious games, which are primarily developed to advance learning or behavior change. These games aim to make beneficial content easier for one to acquire by making the process entertaining. Escape rooms, for instance, can be a fun way of passing the time and at the same time they can improve players’ logical reasoning skills and social skills.
This thesis is a development work in which the purpose was to develop a new occupational therapy method, an escape room, for Masku neurological rehabilitation centre and also to show the theoretical aspect of escape room´s functionality as a part of the rehabilitation. The client of the thesis was Masku neurological rehabilitation centre. The escape room is designed for adults who have neurological disorders. This development work is based on the client’s need for a new, motivating occupational therapy method which develops sensorimotor functions of upper limbs, cognition skills and social skills.
The theoretical framework of this thesis includes information on the impact of neurological disorders and disabilities on an adult’s ability to function along with previous studies of effective rehabilitation methods. Based on the activity analysis, gathered theories and students’ own experiences, the project group designed tasks for the escape room, prepared the materials and built the escape room. The escape room was created using mainly recycled materials.
Since the method cannot be repeated, it cannot be used as the only rehabilitation method, but it suits well as support for other methods. The intention was to have a test run, but due to the current COVID-19-pandemic the escape room’s test run was not possible to arrange and therefore any feedback of the usage of the escape room could not be received.
