The purpose of the thesis was to study the sense of community in a cleaning service company. The study was conducted on management duties at a cleaning service company in Jyväskylä and it was based on an observed need. The purpose of the work was to gain an understanding of the current state of the sense of community in the work community and its meaning for the employers. The research problem was investigate whether sense of community can be created in a work community where its members work in physically different places. The research questions were: Is there sense of community in the work community and does it matter to employees?
The study was conducted as a qualitative study. The data collection method was a structured interview with open-ended questions. The interviews were conducted in March 2020 with nine employees who are working for the same client. The interviews were transcribed, and the results were analysed by themes and coding.
The result was a picture of the current state of sense of community and an understanding of whether the employees consider sense of community important for them and whether there is a desire to develop it. The main results of the study were scarce communication in the work community and at the same time satisfaction with the current situation. The supervisor and the mentor were perceived as important community interactors and providers of help and support. Trust in the work community was generally good, but it was based more on general than perceived trust.
According to the study, sense of community cannot be said to be strong in this work community. The independent nature of work is a significant reason for this. Employees felt the importance sense of community and recognized its positive effects but were not interested in increasing communication with others and were satisfied with their current work situation.
