Aiheelle löytyi tilaaja, Lounais-Suomen Diabetes ry, tammikuussa 2019.
The purpose of this thesis was to compile a written material, a booklet based on a questionnaire survey and a discussion. The content of the booklet consists of the experiences and thoughts of peer supporters and diabetics’ ideas and wishes for developing peer support activities. The aim was to provide information to people with diabetes about the use of peer support and thereby to develop the awareness of diabetics and those taking care of them about the possibilities of using peer support.
A client, Lounais-Suomen Diabetes Ry, was found for the topic in January 2019. Finnish Diabetes Association and Ykköstyypit Ry also joined the co-operation. An electronic survey was sent to Diabetes Association’s trained peer support actors and group counsellors in late summer 2019. In January 2020 a Learning Café -event, that was open to all diabetics, was held in Turku at the meeting place Happy House. Despite the pre-marketing carried out together with client and Ykköstyypit Ry, only 5 people eventually arrived at the event in addition to the client and thesis author. Despite the small number of participants, there was a lot of good discussion and thoughts. The material from the Learning Café event and the questionnaire response material were processed through thematic design.
10-page booklet was made based on the Learning Café event and the electronic sur-vey. The booklet was handed over for the client and partners in electronic form. The booklet manages peer support activities based on same themes as the survey and Learning Café event. The themes in the booklet are peer support as a concept and phenomenon, forms and means of peer support, places to find peer support, identifying the need for peer support, the advantages and challenges of peer support and ideas for develop peer support. In addition to above-mentioned the booklet has a recital and closing words.
A booklet was evaluated by the thesis author and the client. In evaluation came up that the booklet became a diverse and comprehensive whole, and the topic behind the booklet is very important. Here and there was too much repetition and summaries were missing. The booklet was also missing for even more comparisons with other, previous researches. As an idea for further development, there could be planned and carried out a peer support event for diabetics based on the ideas presented in the booklet. Another idea for further development social media could be explored even more deeply as a peer support channel, as it is the fastest growing and developing peer support channel.
