Tiivistelmä
Virtuaalitodellisuuden (VR) suosion kasvaessa muiden kuin peliyhteisöjen keskuudessa, syntyy tarve opettaa työntekijöitä virtuaaliympäristössä. Mikä taas vaatii opettamaan VR-silmikkojen käyttöä. Ongelmana käyttäjillä on oppia käyttämään VR-ohjaimia virtuaalitodellisuudessa liikkumiseen, mikä johtaa koulutuksen laskevaan tehokkuuteen.
Opinnäytetyössä tutkittiin virtuaalitodellisuussovellusten tutoriaaleja vertailemalla kolmea erilaista tutoriaali variaatiota. Tutoriaalien tarkastelupisteeksi otettiin virtuaalitodellisuudessa liikkumiseen käytetty teleporttausmekaniikka. Työn tutoriaalien testauksissa käytettiin Turku Game Lab -pelilaboratorion kehittämää Crumbling Factory -virtuaalitodellisuuspeliprojektia, jonka kehitystyöhön kirjoittaja oli myös osallistunut.
Crumbling Factorysta pelistä toteutettiin kolme versiota. Ensimmäisessä versiossa testaajille ei annettu ohjeistuksia ollenkaan. Toisessa versiossa tutkittava mekaniikka esitettiin tekstinä ja kuvina. Kolmannessa versiossa pelimekaniikka esitettiin videona.
Asiantuntijat testasivat pelin versiot järjestyksessä, jossa tutoriaalin laatua parannetaan asteittain.
With virtual reality (VR) gaining in popularity among non-gaming communities for purposes such as job-related training, many users with limited exposure to such technologies are asked to engage with VR headsets. The problem is that these users struggle to overcome difficulties posed by using the VR-controllers to move around in the virtual space, resulting in lowered effectiveness of training.
The objective of this final thesis was to study virtual reality tutorials by comparing three tutorial variations. The teleportation mechanics used for moving in virtual reality were taken as the point of view for the tutorials. The testing of the tutorials used the Crumbling Factory virtual reality game project developed by the Turku Game Lab, in the development of which the author had also participated.
Three different versions of the Crumbling Factory game were implemented. In the first version, there was no tutorial at all. In the second version, tutorial were presented with a text and images. In the third version, tutorial were presented via a video.
The three variations of the teleportation tutorial were tested by four users with limited to no VR experience and four Turku Game Lab engineers as expert evaluators. This thesis combines the inexperienced user preferences with expert evaluations into a collective analysis, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Inexperienced users only tested one of the versions. Experts tested all three versions iteratively and the quality of the tutorial was improved after each develop-test cycle. The inexperienced testers had 10 minute for testing and the testing time of the experts was not limited. Every inexperienced user test and expert test sessions were recorded. After the tests were completed, web -based Google Forms questionnaires were filled by all testers both users and experts.
The inexperienced recordings analysis revealed that the quality of the tutorial was not sufficient to ensure the learning of mechanics. No further conclusions could be drawn about the factors influencing learning due to the small number of testers. Expert opinion indicated that the worst possible tutorial would be let the user to read large amounts of text. The best tutorial would be an interactive video tutorial.
This thesis clearly shows that of the three tutorial variations that were presented in this thesis, the graphical animated tutorial should be used for further testing with a large group of participants to better understand how it can be improved
