Tiivistelmä
Possession in ice hockey is an important feature for having success. Owning the puck means you are on offense trying for a chance to score while, the op-ponents is on defence working to earn possession back.

However currently ice hockey is trailing other goal oriented sports in their analysis of possession within the sport. The current accepted method to measure possession is the accumulations of the even strength shot attempts during a game, also known as Corsi%. The method is simple to tabulate but as a result can also lead to misleading results.

This study will examine a forgotten possession metric used by Anatoli Tasarov, also known as the Father of Russian hockey, because of his dominance in the world stage during his tenure as coach. The method Tasarov used to measure possession was by calculating the number of successful passes completed by each team. A pass between teammates the puck possession is retained and furthermore a team that makes more passes would therefore have more puck possession.

Upcoming advancements in technology will make the calculation of Tasarov’s passing metric easier and effective. This study will analyze the professional ice hockey team, Ferencvárosi TC, from Budapest and compare the Corsi% to Tasarov’s passing possession metric. The study will show that the passing method of measuring possession should be the metric used in the future to calculate possession as it is more accurate and can give greater depth of information on possession within the game of ice hockey.
