The need for palliative care is increasing globally due to increase of the cancer patients and aging of the population. WHO has estimated that 40 million people around the globe are in need of palliative care annually. Currently only 14% of those in need of palliative care have accessibility to it.
The aim of this study is to describe the experiences registered nurses have on providing palliative care to their patients. This research purposes to clarify how to increase registered nurses’, who offer palliative care, wellbeing at work.
The literature review conducted consisted of defining the research question, systematically searching for information, selecting the studies, assessing their quality and both analyzing and presenting the results of the studies. The articles were gathered from different databases and journals. After final information search 181 results were identified. Eventually 10 studies were accepted in the literature review.
The found studies discussed the experiences registered nurses have on providing palliative care. The results of the literature review showed that registered nurses require more education on palliative care issues. There are many barriers to quality palliative care including lack of continuity, time pressure, communication errors and lack of knowledge and skills.
