Tiivistelmä
Internet of Things (IoT) technology is becoming increasingly popular and widely used in science and technology circles. There is no doubt about the future potential and its involvement to the human modernization. Therefore, it is extremely important for engineering students to get their first approaches to this new kind of technology. This thesis is conducted for HAMK’s teaching material, with the purpose of giving new coming students to have basic understandings about the IoT’s concepts by implementing it into a small simple lamp-control project.

The main contents for the theorical part of the thesis include a brief introduction to the IoT, its working principal, components, explanation for the advantages it offers in automation engineering and the current issues in data security which it is facing. Furthermore, a detailed guild for the two most common IoT communication protocols, MQTT and OPC UA, is also be given. In addition, a suggestion for cloud server selection for HAMK’s own IoT system, as well as individual projects will also be mentioned. On the other hand, an IoT system will be constructed by using a popular machine in automation world, Programmable Logic Controller, with the usage of a newly released gateway application, Beckhoff TC3 IoT Data Agent, in the practical part. The final content is to give some examples and ideas for the development, improvement, and expansion of the IoT studies in HAMK based on the framework of the prototype project. As the final result, the lamp controlling project is successfully built with lamp signals being controlled via MQTT protocols using Beckhoff TC3 IoT Data Agent and publish the messages onto Amazon Web Service Cloud. Drawn from the project with the theories, students and references should be able to have basic conceptions about IoT and its protocols such as MQTT and OPC UA along with the importance of data security in IoT nowadays.
