The purpose of this study was to examine the elements that affect the housing situation of the people of old age.
The theoretical part provides an introduction to social gerontological theories, functional ageing, the living situation and the needs among the older adults. The study was conducted through qualitative interviews with four respondents who all work as managers within the home care service. The study is built of the respondents´ subjective opinions of their clients´ will, health and housing situations.
The study revealed that a majority of older people wish to continue living in their own house. Older people manage this well, as long as there is a desire to live in their old home. But if there is no desire or if one got health issues, the elder may be forced to move away from home. Although most people wish to continue living at home, there are also some who do not wish to live alone in their own home, but they are compelled to do so because they do not meet the conditions that would grant them a place at e retirement home.
The most common factors that affect home living are health, loneliness, insecurity, needs and the condition and the position of the home.
