Tiivistelmä
Nuorten ruokatottumuksilla on suuri merkitys tulevaisuuden kansanterveydelle.
Opinnäytetyö on kuvaileva kirjallisuuskatsaus, jonka kohderyhmänä on suomalaiset 12-16- vuotiaat kouluikäiset nuoret.
Koulu on nuoren ruokailutottumuksien muodostumisessa tärkein tiedonjakaja. The eating habits of adolescents have a significant impact on the future of public health. Currently 29% of boys and 21% of girls, aged between 13-16, can be considered to be overweight. The percentage of obese adolescents has steadily grown over the years, with no signs stopping. The eating habits of adolescents are forged during childhood and usually stay the same throughout life. A diet is not chosen, it is learned. Adolescents learn and adopt their eating habits from their parents and from school, both of these have an important role in building a healthy relationship to food.
Parents and the home are the main contributors in the formation of eating habits. Parents function, above all, as role models and are responsible for the creation of a healthy "food environment" for their children. The purpose of this thesis is to concentrate on the effects that home and family have on the eating habits of adolescents, and how those habits are born. The thesis will also provide information on factors that influence said habits, both inside home and family and outside. This thesis will also examine the impacts that these habits have on the general health of adolescents.
This thesis is a literature review, with Finnish adolescents aged 12-16 as it's focus group. Included in this work are a total of 23 research papers, publications from different organizations and other general instruction, that were mainly found through internet databases (Medic, Pubmed and Google Scholar).
School is the most important distributor of information regarding the formation of eating habits in adolescents. Nutritional basics are included in Finnish education and in addition; the school lunch functions as a great way to educate children on eating habits. Due to school lunches being an important factor in the formation of adolescent eating habits, this thesis will also, as a secondary, delve into how school lunches have chanced from the year 2000 to this day.
