The purpose of the study is to describe what the nurse’s role is in palliative home health care. The research question is: What is the role of the nurse in palliative home health care?
The study is a qualitative systematic literature study. A total of 11 articles have been analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The article search was done in the databases CINAHL, PubMed as well as EBSCO. As a theoretical starting point, Jean Watson's theory of care has been used.
The result showed that the nurse has many different roles in palliative home health care. Creating a trusting relationship with the patient and their relatives is necessary for providing good care at home. Informing the relatives and including them is important in order to meet the individual needs of the patient. The nurse should also be able to offer emotional support to the patient and their relatives or next of kin.
Communication and collaboration with other professional groups facilitate the continuity of care. The results in the study show that nurses often play a key role, and work as a link between the patient and the doctor. Being available creates reassurance when the patient and the relatives know who to turn to. Managing and administering medicines also belongs to the role of the nurse. Even though the doctor is responsible for the pharmacological treatment, the nurse participates in assessment and follow-up. A professional education as well as continuing education is necessary for working with seriously ill patients in their home. Further, the study revealed that nurses learned from each other in the practical work. The study also showed the nurses need for support, for them to be able to work in palliative home health care.
