This thesis discussed the nursing care of preterm infants and the factors affecting it from birth to intensive care. The most common diseases of preterm infants are also presented. A preterm infant is an infant born prematurely after the 22nd week of pregnancy but before the 37th week. In Finland 5-6 percent of infants are born prematurely. This is one of the lowest numbers in the world. Monitoring of a premature infant includes tracking the breathing, skin color, oxygen saturation, behavior, blood circulation, body temperature and the response to pain medication. The observation of a premature infant should be as gentle as possible and non-invasive methods are preferable.
The purpose of this thesis was to collect evidence-based information on the nursing of a preterm infant. The educational material was written for students attending the course on Nursing of children and adolescents at Satakunta University of Applied Science. It is ment to be used to support independent studying for student interested in preterm infants. The aim was to provide nursing students with evidence-based information on nursing of preterm infants and the factors that affect it.
The thesis was made as a functional thesis. The educational material was executed on Power Point and was a 34 pages long informational package of the most important parts of the thesis. The material focuses on the most important factors in nursing of preterm infants from the delivery room to the intensive care unit. The information is supported by pictures that portray nursing methods. The educational material was reworked according to the feedback from the orderer of the thesis. The material was shortened after the feedback. The educational material was downloaded to Moodle-study platform.
In the future this project could be continued with research on the nursing care of infants after being discharged from the hospital.
