The aim of the Bachelor ́s thesis is to produce material so that the client, the city of Parainen, will be able to develop the existing pilgrimage route St. Olav Waterway in the Turku Archipelago. The pilgrim trail goes from Turku Cathedral, to the archipelago of Parainen, across Åland Islands to Sweden, where it is connected to existing St. Olof ́s trails. The destination of the pilgrim trail is Nidaros Cathedral, where Saint Olav is buried, in Trondheim, Norway. It has been over a year since the pilgrim trail was inaugurated in the spring of 2019, and now they want to find out the entrepreneurs' attitude to the project and whether they think they are ready enough to receive this new tourism segment.
By studying theory about hiking tourism, pilgrimage tourism and destination development, as well as conducting qualitative surveys with entrepreneurs along the trail, we acquired knowledge of how entrepreneurs have perceived hiking tourism, if there is enough information about St. Olav Waterway, how many hikers have been estimated to have visited the companies and how to develop the trail to increase the number of hikers. It is also described in the theory of who Saint Olav was and about the project St. Olav Waterway. We have also conducted a smaller quantitative survey aimed to hikers, to get their point of view on how the trail is now and what the hikers think is important to improve, but the interviews with the entrepreneurs were our main survey. The results report the answers from the interviews with the entrepreneurs and from the surveys, so that the client receives a summarized material that can be used to be able to develop St. Olav Waterway. Results show that it’s difficult to see specific differences between a hiking- or pilgrim tourist and ordinary tourists who visit companies in the archipelago, all respondents in the survey agreed that the city of Parainen can help provide information and offer more marketing to companies along the pilgrimage trail. The analysis also presents five development proposals that can help in the development of St. Olav Waterway.
