Tiivistelmä
The primary aim of this study was to estimate the current public awareness and knowledge level of physiotherapy (PT) and to explore its associated factors in Mainland China. Besides, this research determined if there are group differences of various demographic factors in knowledge score.

A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from November through to December 2019 in Chengdu, China. The multistage cluster sampling technique was used to conduct the survey. A multiple-choice paper questionnaire form was translated into Chinese and used to collect the data from 384 participants. In total, 308 questionnaires were eligible for analysis in this study.

Frequencies were used and expressed as percentages (n, %) for demographic data and knowledge related questions. Chi-squared analysis was used to assess the association between the knowledge level and the pre-selected grouped demographic factors. Kruskal-Wallis H and Mann- Whitney U tests were applied to compare knowledge scores of each domain with various demographic factors.

As a result, 27.7% of the respondents had a poor knowledge level (0-6 points). 61.7% of the participants’ knowledge scores were ranked from 7 to 12 points. Only 13.6% of them scored 13 to 18 points (adequate knowledge). The knowledge level was statistically significantly associated with educational level (p= .017), income level (p= .030), and participants’ familiarity with PT (p= .000). Besides, the higher educational group had higher knowledge score (Md=10) than the lower educational group (Md=8), p= .009. There was no statistically significant group difference in knowledge score among other demographic factors.

The present study concluded that the public had some but insufficient knowledge regarding PT. Demographic factors education and income level were associated with knowledge level. Besides, the knowledge level was associated with respondents’ familiarity with PT as well. Moreover, the higher educational level group had higher knowledge scores than the lower educational group, especially on what is PT about, and which techniques are implemented.
