Fotbollen har växt från en sport för de fattiga till att idag bli en av världens stora industrier. Med detta skapas nya utmaningar för fotbollsklubbarna att hålla koll på den ekonomiska biten. I den finska ligan kämpar klubbarna ständigt med balansgången att hålla sina ekonomiska siffror på den positiva sidan samtidigt som man strävar efter goda idrottsliga prestationer.
Syftet med arbetet är att ta reda på om det finns ett samband mellan god ekonomisk ställning och goda idrottsliga prestationer i klubbar i den finska tipsligan. Teoridelen i arbetet består av information om fotbollens utveckling både som sport och industri samt en del om den typiska organisationsmodellen i en fotbollsklubb.
Undersökningen utfördes genom en kvantitativ metod där sju olika klubbars bokslut studerades. Tre olika nyckeltal valdes sedan till sex korrelationstest för att se hur starkt sambandet är. Förutom att testen gjordes med samma års tabellplacering mot samma års nyckeltal gjordes också en undersökning med ett års förskjutning. Nyckeltalen som användes i testen är soliditet, årets resultat och eget kapital.
Resultatet för korrelationstesterna i denna undersökning visade att inget statistiskt signifikant samband fanns. Även om det i tidigare undersökningar inom samma område påvisats starka samband mellan ekonomin och de idrottsliga prestationerna kan det svaga sambandet i denna undersökning bero på fel val av variabler och att studien inte skedde över tillräckligt många år. Variabler som spelarlöner och intäkter skulle kanske påvisat ett starkare samband. The sport of football has grown from a poor man’s game into one of the biggest industries in the world. These changes causes new economic challenges for the football clubs around the world. In the finnish league, teams are constantly struggling with balancing good economic results with good results on the field.
The purpose of this thesis is to find out if there is a connection between the athletic performance and the financial status in football clubs in the finnish Veikkausliiga.
The theoretical part consist of information about the development of the sport. It also includes a part about the typical organizational structure in football clubs. The survey is based on observations of seven different clubs in the Veikkausliiga. The data consist of three different key ratios from the annual reports and also the placement in the league table. Six different tests were conducted to see if there was a strong connection between the financial status and good athletic performance. Three of the tests were made with one year’s displacement between the financial status and the league table. The key ratios used were solidity, net profit and equity.
The results ofthe survey shows that there is no correlation between the financial status and athletic performance in the Veikkausliiga. Even though several other surveys in the same field have proven a strong connection between the financial status and athletic performance, the weak connection in this survey may be the result of picking the wrong variables. Player salaries and income would perhaps have been better variables.
