The purpose of this thesis was to study the pedagogical approach to work in Espoo City Library. The objective was to find out what the pedagogical approach with regards to work means in the library context.
This thesis studied three cases which were assistant services for immigrants in Iso omena and Sello libraries. In these places the customers may receive help with filling out or completing official forms or reading letters from the officials, working with seniors on the field, and the maker space in Tapiola library. The thesis was conducted in the form of a case study. The methods were observation and semi-structured, thematic interviews that were conducted by email and in person.
The thesis examined at the law on public libraries and its background and operating environment of libraries. Finland passed a new law on public libraries in 2016 in which the tasks of libraries were updated. The study found out that in many ways the pedagogical approach to work had already been put into use before the changes. In the library maker space the staff had been learning together with the customers.
In the assistance services and working with seniors the staff was giving a lot of time to individual customers. The cases studied in this thesis were examples of what pedagogical approach to work is in practice. It’s first and foremost communicating, learning together, and interacting with the customer.
