In the thesis, I look into the process of forming my work of art and how the art opens up to different interpretations and gives in to dialogue in the context and space of a museum of cultural history. The artistic part of the thesis is Langanpäitä-silpputyö artwork, which was on display at the Steam Engine Museum in the Finnish Labour Museum Werstas for two weeks in October 2020.
I approach the artwork from different angles and perspectives and use introspection to look at the artistic process and the artwork taking a place in the setting of the museum of cultural history. I investigate the space and time of my work in relation to the surrounding context. The thesis includes extracts from my diary from the years 2018–2020. In addition, I cover the particular features of museum exhibitions and compare them to artworks in terms of their presentation.
I define the artwork in my thesis as experimental. The artwork is composed of different parts which I use in examining the shape, colour, boundaries and experience born in experimentation. The idea of experimental art liberates from conventionality and is released from the pursuit of perfection.
I noticed that the space is defined differently in installing an artwork in a museum compared to setting museum objects on display. Art is granted more space than museum objects and art is surrounded by a circle of untouched appreciation. A contemporary artwork is rarely set inside a showcase. On the other hand, the place of artwork as separate piece of work in a museum of cultural history has been compromised by instrumentalizing it.
