The purpose of this thesis was to gather experiences from nursing staff about the patient health record system of the end-of-life care. This thesis discussed topics like how the system works and how patients and their closely related are taken care of in this journey of the end-of-life care. The first goal was to find information and provide knowledge on how the end-of-life treatment plan was used. Second, the aim was to find out what kind of developmental needs there were and what kind of education was required from the staff´s perspective.
In the thesis, the research method was qualitative. Material was collected with theme interviews and the open questions were made by the authors of the thesis. The collected material was transcribed and the results were analyzed by using an inductive content analysis. The interviewees were practical nurses and registered nurses. As a result, the nurses thought that the end-of-life care was important and valuable including the respect for the individuality of patients and their relatives. The decisions to start the end-of-life treatment were found difficult. According to the interviewees, the plan for the end-of-life care was sometimes defective and the end-of-life care patient information system did not work properly. Finally, more education on the end-of-life care was requested.
