This degree thesis is a commission work for Arcada and has the purpose to function as background information for the IMPAECT-project which is an EU-project with Arcada as the commissioner. The purpose is to summarize the earlier researches of intercultural competence within kindergarten. The research questions were: What should be taken into consideration when working with children from different cultural background? And how can children with a different cultural background be supported in kindergarten from a practical point of view.
The degree thesis was made as a literature review where the text is based on earlier re-searches, scientific articles and literature. The criterions for the selected literature and ar-ticles were that they should be scientific, involve intercultural competence and teaching. The selected articles had to be published in 2003 or later. This study is based on 10 scien-tific articles within to context of intercultural competence. The chosen articles were pro-cessed using a content analysis.
The results showed that the teachers didn’t have the necessary training that the use of in-tercultural competence as a method of teaching implies. The teachers’ personal opinion of cultural diversity influences the teaching. The teacher should stimulate to a cultural di-verse view among the children. The tools which are meant for children’s play should rep-resent cultural diversity. The children should be considered as individuals and not as rep-resentatives for a certain culture. The children should be given the opportunity to experi-ence cultural diversity in form of guided and free activity. The parents should be seen as a resource and the knowledge they have about their own culture should be exploited. The parents should be representatives of their cultures, by being invited to guide an activity for the children in the form of play, song etc. what then should express the culture they are representatives of.
