The aim of this thesis was to find out the role of work-related networks in career design. The study resulted in a deeper understanding of the motives for joining the networks and the expectations placed on the networks.
The topic was approached through a motivational diamond derived from self-direction theory, the idea of networks, and design thinking. The context of the study was the membership of the Facebook group focusing on the twists and turns of the client's working life. The study was conducted as a case study and the material was collected through thematic interviews. Six group members participated in the interviews. The interviews were analyzed by searching the material for descriptive expressions, reducing and thematizing them.
As a result of the research, it became clear that the main motivation to belong to work-related networks was to increase one's own ability. Through the networks, the aim was to increase one's own skills, obtain information related to one's own work and find new job opportunities. The voluntary nature of networking and the sense of togetherness associated with networking were also considered important. The least emphasis was on charity, although the idea of networks is based specifically on reciprocity.
Networks related to work were considered particularly important during job search and adult studies. These results can be utilized in the development work of the client's working life network.
