The purpose of the Bachelor’s thesis is to answer questions about the importance of sea trout for the Åland Islands. How important is the sea trout population for the tourism industry and the economy? Tourism is in general an important source of income for the Åland society, and sport fishing is an important part of the tourism industry on the islands.
To answer the question of the importance of sea trout, data were collected through online surveys, interviews and literature research. The online survey provided answers to questions such as: How often do the respondents fish? How important is sea trout to the respondents and what are their views on the importance of sea trout to the Åland Islands? Interviews were further conducted with fisheries’ managers, hatchery professionals, professional fishermen, fish biologists and politicians with strong ties to the Åland society.
Based on the analyzed data from the survey, interviews and literature used in this thesis it is clear that the sea trout is important for the tourism sector and economy in the Åland Islands. Without maintaining sustainable fisheries with the help of various conservation measures, including fish stocking of sea trout, the risks are high that the sportfishing tourism would decrease, which consequently would have a negative effect on the
