Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this literature review is to find the causes of burnout among nurses in hos-pital settings and what are the interventions that are being done to prevent burnout.
Burnout is one of the major problems among nurses and this thesis finds out what are the factors and causes interact with each other to cause burnout and what can be done to stop burnout from happening by applying various interventions. Theoretical framework chosen for this thesis is Maslach’s burnout theory which defines burnout as a group of psychological symptoms that is developed after having long term stress in the workplace due to many factors which may be emotional or psychological symptoms.
Literature review is done by coding , categorizing and dividing into themes from the articles chosen from databases: EBSCO, CINAHL, Science Direct, PubMed and Google Scholar. 25 articles were chosen after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria. The findings from the articles revealed that high work demand, lack of control and reward and dissatisfaction from work are the causes of burnout. Interventions and coping mechanisms of burnout are improving communication skills, team work, mixed intervention and psychological intervention like yoga, mindfulness, and spiritual programs.
