Tiivistelmä
Japanissa metsässä ulkoilusta käytetään ilmausta shinrin-yoku, joka käännettynä tarkoittaa metsäkylpyä. Metsäkylvyssä ihminen aistii kaikilla aisteillaan ympäröivää luontoa, ja keskittyy näihin tuntemiinsa aistimuksiin. Aisteihin ja ympäröivään luontoon keskittymisellä on todettu olevan rentouttava ja rauhoittava vaikutus. Shinrin-yoku nähdään palauttavana ja erityisesti stressiä vähentävänä metodina. Metsäkylvyn vaikuttavuudesta on tehty viime aikoina paljon tutkimuksia erityisesti Japanissa.
Jatkotutkimuksen tarve on erityisesti metsäkylvyn yhdistämisestä käytännössä muuhun kuntoutukseen. Tarvetta on myös laadukkaalle tutkimusnäytölle intervention vaikutuksista eri kuntoutuksen asiakasryhmillä. In Japan, enjoying a walk in the forest is called shinrin-yoku, which translates to forest bathing. In forest bathing the person takes in the surrounding nature with all their senses and concentrates on the created perceptions. Focusing on the senses and the nature has been found to have a soothing and calming effect. Shinrin-yoku is seen as a restorative and especially stress reducing method. The effects of forest bathing have been studied widely in the recent years, especially in Japan.
The purpose of this thesis was to gather the researched information about the effects of forest bathing to health and well-being through integrated literature review.
The goal of the thesis was to offer evidence based results about forest bathing for physical therapy professionals, encouraging them to use forest bathing at their work and to help them guide their patients to surround themselves with nature. Another goal was to create study proven knowledge for a client. The client of the thesis was the Turku University of Applied Sciences.
The literature review process included defining the survey questions, fact searching, choosing the research material, assessing the quality of the research material, analysing of the findings, and the presentation of the conclusions. The research material was gathered from four databases (Academic Search Elite, CINAHL, Elsevier (Science Direct) and Pubmed). The literature review was based on 18 research articles. Inductive content analysis was the analysis method used for the research materials.
According to the findings forest bathing can create positive physical and psychological changes even in a short time frame, which serve the overall health and well-being of a person. In a forest environment the pulse and blood pressure lowered, the change in heart rate variability increased and the level of stress hormones decreased. The added values of forest bathing were the feeling of relaxation, increased sense of vitality, and improved connection with nature.
Based on this literature review it can be concluded that health and rehabilitation sectors’ attachment to forest environment would serve in the support of the clients’ physical and mental health well-being. There is a need for further study of combining the forest bathing with other types of rehabilitation. There is also a need for high quality research based evidence for the effects of intervention for different client groups.
