Tiivistelmä
Opinnäytetyö käsittelee ikää esiintyvän sirkusartistin näkökulmasta. Työ on lähtöisin sirkusalalle keskimääräistä vanhempana valmistuvan tekijän henkilökohtaisesta tuskailusta oman ikänsä suhteen. Työn tärkeimpänä tutkimusaineistona on suomalaisille sirkusammattilaisille tehdyn kyselytutkimuksen tulokset.
This thesis discusses age in the context of performing circus artists. The basis of the thesis is in the minor age crisis of its writer, who is some eight to twelve years older than the average graduate into the circus field. The thesis consists of a survey, conducted among finnish circus professionals, accompanied with a short introductory segment into the science of aging.
The scientific section is concerned with the effects of age to physical training, ability to learn new skills, and the recovery potential of the human body. The section is a brief introduction into a massive, complex subject.
The survey was conducted during the years 2020–2021. The questionnaire was divided into three sections regarding aging – personal aspect, social aspect, and communal aspect – and it was answered by 27 finnish circus professionals. The participants of the survey included persons fresh out of school, as well as experienced professionals with lot of years under their belt. When analyzing the answers, the focus was on finding big over-arching themes, different viewpoints and opinions, as well as interesting details.
During the writing of this thesis the relationship the writer has with his age changed, and the writer is now more content. According to current research, aging is a highly complex process, and increasing age per se does not stop one from being a circus artist. Also, the writer is clearly not alone with his concerns, and age as a subject invokes a lot of thoughts among his peers. The writer hopes that this thesis can offer ideas and information to anyone wrestling with the complex subject of aging.
