Opinnäytetyön tuloksena on vaatimusdokumentti, johon sisältyy tuotteen kehitysjono (engl. Product Backlog).
The purpose of the thesis was to study the requirements management process in the project-based learning environment theFIRMA in the Turku University of Applied Sciences and to develope the process in a more agile direction. There exists no previous plan for requirements management in theFIRMA; therefore, some delays occur in the projects. One of the main reasons for the delays is failing to establish a clear method in the beginning of every project. Instead, there seems to be a tendency of acting according to the circumstances and relying on experiential understanding. The projects had distinct characteristics of various methods, such as the Agile methods (Scrum framework), traditional methods (Waterfall model) and attempts to combine Kanban board (Trello) among others to the aforesaid methods.
The research methods used in the thesis were observation research and benchmarking. The research material consisted of observations gathered during the project, the themes of which were: communication, responsibilities, selected methods and customer feedback.
The new requirements document template, which far better suits the needs of agile requirements management, resulted from the thesis' practical section. In addition, I made development proposals for theFIRMA's requirements management based on the findings. My development proposals also include the idea of a project document for the initial phase of the project, which helps in committing human resources more efficiently to an agile method and lays the foundation for the next stages of the project. In addition, the project document can always be re-examined at later stages should there be employee reassignment or in the case that the agility of the workflow is being evaluated.
TheFIRMA’s challenge is that it is a learning environment, and to that end the level of agility cannot reach the same level as in the real business world. As a result of the thesis it is proposed that a hybrid model that combines the best practices of the waterfall model and Scrum is applied to the student environment. In the future when agile skills can be found at theFIRMA, a combination of Scrum and Kanban (Scrumban) is worth of testing, however, this requires the support of theFIRMA key persons.
