This thesis describes laboratory tests for the disease malaria. The thesis depicts briefly, the background, symptoms, treatment and prevention of the disease. It portrays the different malarial parasites that can cause a malaria infection in humans, and it deals separately about Plasmodium falciparum, Plasmodium malariae, Plasmodium ovale, Plasmodium vivax and about Plasmodium knowlesi. The thesis explains the different stages malaria parasites can be in, inside the human body. The thesis also focuses on the different laboratory test that are done when malaria is suspected and how to achieve a, in terms of quality, good thick drop smear.
The purpose of this thesis is to spread knowledge about the different stages of malaria parasites and how laboratory staff should do when taking samples from a patient with a suspected malaria infection. The method for this thesis is a literature study and the information is taken from scientific articles and from websites. The limitation for the scientific articles was that they should been published between 2011 and 2021.
It is common, when malaria is suspected, to do both thin smears and thick smears to find malaria parasites and be able to make sure what kind of plasmodium it is that causes the infection. It is important to take the tests at the right time and to do it the right way to get a reliable result. To get an idea of whether there are malaria parasites in the blood films, it is possible to do a rapid diagnostic test that can be used as a complement to microscopy. Malaria diagnosis can also be done with PCR-method.
