Tiivistelmä
This diary-based thesis presents the coach’s professional growth during the 2020/21 season.

The author studied in the Degree Programme of Sports Coaching and Management in Vierumäki, Finland. The first two years are an intensive period on the Campus. The third year serves as the work placement. In that year, the students can apply the acquired knowledge in a practical setting.

The creator of this paper conducted his internship with the Junior Pelicans, where he served as the Head Coach for the U13/U14 PH team. PH refers to the local cities Heinola and Vääksy, which are part of the Päjät-Häme region in Finland.

The student wrote the dissertation during his work placement, which started in May 2020 and lasted until May 2021.


The core duties for the work placement included annual planning and on-ice and off-ice planning. Furthermore, part of the responsibilities was to run the planned on and off-ice sessions. Another core duty of the student was game day coaching. Finally, the student was responsible for player evaluation and progress monitoring.


The entire journal process lasted for eleven weeks and consists of 40 entries in total. Each week, the publisher established weekly objectives. Based on the weekly objectives, daily objectives were established. At the end of each week, the author conducted weekly analyzes.

Through this approach, the publisher was able to reflect critically on a daily and weekly basis.
The author could not reflect on his game-day coaching since the undergraduate conducted his internship during Covid-19 times. To fill the gap, the publisher performed Zoom training sessions with the athletes. Thus, he was able to reflect on online training from week five and onwards.
The creator of this work made two pivotal observations during his dissertation. Firstly, he realized how essential it is to establish weekly and daily objectives. Based on the first recognition, the undergraduate learned how valuable it is to reflect critically and honestly on the introduced weekly and daily objectives. This approach was the key to the professional growth of the student. In terms of skills, the student acquired academic writing skills during the writing process. Over and above, the author was able to improve specific coaching behaviours. Those are debated in-depth in the dissertation. Finally, the student improved his interpersonal skills. Specifically, the strongest improvement he feels is the capability of solving problems, communicating, listening efficiently, and being conscious about the impact of non-verbal communication.
