Tutkimusryhmänäni toimii nuorten kansantanssiryhmä, jossa on 15−19-vuotiaita tanssijoita.
The purpose of this research report and work of dance is to acquaint people with folklore and the traditions of the great moments of life. I also open up what meanings traditions and rituals have for a young folk dance enthusiast and what motivates young people to practice folk dance. The basic idea of the thesis report and work of dance is the idea that tradition is in all of us and it lives and changes over time.
My research is qualitative as well as artistic. My research group is a youth folk dance group with dancers aged 15-19. The dancers have responded to a survey I conducted, the responses of which I used as the material for my report. The purpose of artistic research is to bring tradition close to the general public through a dance work and thereby increase awareness and appreciation of tradition.
According to the survey, young people perceived traditions as an important part of family celebrations and the majority perceived traditions as important and meaningful in their lives. Folklore was perceived as difficult to put into words and was not tought as part of a young person’s life, other than through a folk dance hobby. The majority of respondents felt that folk dance received a lot of negative attention, which made them feel ashamed of their hobby. However, the sense of community within one's own group as well as in the entire folk dance community, as well as doing and belonging to a group, is so strong that young people have wanted to continue folk dance despite external pressure.
