Opinnäytetyön tilaaja on Tawastia Golf & Country Club. Golf is often considered a harmful sport to the environment, and with negligent golf course maintenance it can be that. This thesis introduces Finnish golf course maintenance and the international GEO Foundation certificate. The example field in this thesis is Tawast Golf in Hämeenlinna. Their aim is to get a GEO certificate by 2023.
To get a GEO certificate, a golf course must join GEO Foundation organisation’s paid OnCourse programme, where they write up their procedures and yearly data – water usage, nutrients, etc. – for one whole calendar year. In addition to this, the course must report on at least three highlights for sustainable development, which means changes done at the golf course, before they can apply for the certificate. This thesis shows how the OnCourse programme works, how reporting highlights happens – and how the GEO certification process works in practice.
This thesis was ordered by Tawastia Golf & Country Club. The thesis presents the course maintenance measures of Tawast Golf during the 2021 season and reflect on them moving under the GEO certificate.
