The purpose of this thesis is to study the building of trust in virtual project teams from the perspective of a project manager. The latest advances in technology have changed the way people communicate and work. More and more organizations are deploying virtual teams, and pandemic conditions have forced those who did not want to work into virtual work as well. In today’s organizations, trust is seen as an important success factor to ensure effective collaboration.
The aim of this thesis is to explore how trust evolves in virtual project teams while the maturity increases, and to identify the factors that affect the development of trust in virtual teams.
Four project managers participated in the study, all of whom led one MuPIC course virtual project team. There were four interview rounds and they were held in early 2021 after certain MuPIC course checkpoints, when it was possible to assume that the teams had reached certain stages in Wheelan’s integrated model of group development.
The results of the study show that the development of trust in a virtual team is especially affected by communication, conflicts, the role of the project manager and feedback. The factors affecting the development of trust describe well the different stages of Wheelan’s IMGD.
