This thesis examines in what way singing teachers who work in the field of basic arts education in the Swedish-speaking region in Finland work, regarding objectives and evaluation of achievements. The purpose of this study is to look into how music institutes and teachers have related to the changes followed by the current national core curriculum that came into force in the autumn of 2018. Further, I want to highlight what developments teachers can see regarding the students’ motivation.
Research questions:
· How has singing teachers’ ways of working changed as the national core curriculum for basic arts education in Finland were renewed and taken into force in the autumn of 2018?
· How do singing teachers at music institutes in Finland set goals for and with their students?
· What kind of development can teachers see regarding the students’ motivation due to a more individualized teaching?
The work includes literature studies and a qualitative study where I collected material through semi-structured interviews.
The results of the study show that the change was not as considerable as expected at several of the institutes. Three out of five activities look relatively similar to past ones in terms of content of the studies and performance of achievements, however, students are included in the choice of repertoire. Two of the institutes in this study have chosen to run a more individually focused teaching, according to the students’ own objectives.
