I participate in a larger project where my part is to design an active filter and amplifier module for a reference monitor. My work builds on a loudspeaker project that was a part of a course in loudspeaker technology. The different tasks in the project are among other things to design and simulate the filters of the module, to design the circuit board layout and to build the first prototype of the circuit. My work is commissioned by Arcada.
The thesis consists of several parts. The thesis stands as a report on all the different stages that are required when working with the project. For the thesis to be of more benefit to the general public it also describes more in detail the use of active analog filters in reference monitors. It also describes the operating principle of the reference monitor and what kind of requirements are set on reference monitors. Every part in this thesis is included to give a better understanding of what one strives for with a project similar to this and why things are done the way they are.
The work demanded by the project is similar to what I have done before and been in contact with as a student. The part of the thesis that describes reference monitors and active analog filters is based on generally accepted information and rules of thumb in these fields. My claims are primarily taken from handbooks written for audio engineers and documents published by companies in the field.
The different parts of the project are presented so that they describe what have been done and why. Unnecessary details and explanations are left out. The prototype of the module is tested and evaluated. Suggestions for improvements and solutions for the problems encountered when testing are also included.
