The aim of this study is to describe how new mothers experience the information about child care that they receive before being discharged from the maternity ward, to find out what the mothers have learned and what they missed and what they thought should be improved regarding the information. The study has been carried out in order for the nursing staff to be able to provide new mothers with good information before discharge. The research questions the writers have proceeded from are: how do the mothers experience the information about child care they receive before discharge from the maternity ward, what the mothers have learned from the information and what they missed and what needs to be improved regarding the information.
The theoretical approaches that the writers have used are Eriksson’s (1995) theory about playing and learning, Berg’s (2004) theory about the relationship of caring and Mayeroff’s (1990) theory about the main ingredients of caring. This is a qualitative study and data has been collected trough semistructured interviews. The participants were all first time mothers. Content analysis has been used to analyze the data. The results showed that the mothers experienced the information as, one the one hand good and educational, and, on the other hand, bad, and inappropriate for the occasion. The mothers have learned different lifting techniques and have received advice how to take care of the baby’s hygiene. What missed and what needs to be improved according to the information were, for example, how the mothers can feel after the delivery, why certain things has been done in different ways and the parenting classes.
