Covid-19 pandemian aiheuttamien muutosten myötä palveluiden tarve vaikuttaa kasvaneen. Vaikka osallistujamäärä jäi alhaiseksi, tuloksia voidaan pitää suuntaa antavina. Palveluita tulee edelleen kehittää käyttäjäystävällisemmäksi, koska palveluiden piiriin pääsemisessä havaittiin haasteita. The Covid-19 pandemic caused significant changes in the daily lives of students. The issue has been considered both nationally and, on a university-by-university basis. The Ministry of Education and Culture funds various university projects to support and improve student well-being. At Jyväskylä University of Applied Sciences (JAMK), the OHKE project develops operating models for student well-being.
The thesis was done as part of the OHKE project. The aim of the thesis and research problem were limited to the question of which factors influencing student well-being do students need to change. This was divided into three separate research questions which examined students’ knowledge of their rights related to student health care and maintenance of well-being, the use of services related to maintenance of student well-being and the perceived change of additional needs of students identified for and maintenance of student well-being.
The thesis was carried out as a quantitative survey. The method of qualitative research was also used in the analysis of open questions. The survey was created with an electronic survey tool based on the research questions. The link was shared to all JAMK students through the students’ online environment (Elmo Intra). The survey was open for three weeks in November 2021.
There were 29 responses. Most respondents (82 per cent) were women, third-year social and health students. The results of the survey revealed the students’ need for information in matters related to study well-being. Not everyone had enough information about rights or services related to student well-being. The services were considered necessary but access to them was perceived as challenging. The difficulty of finding information was also raised. There was a wish for one site where aggregated information and links to the welfare services available to the student would be easily found throughout the institution.
The conclusion is the necessity and usefulness of student welfare services in maintaining student well-being. With the changes caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the need for services seemed to have increased. Although the number of participants remained low, the results can be considered as indicative. The services need to be further developed to be more user-friendly, as challenges were identified in accessing to the services.
