Abstract
Our final project was part of the "Patient Education of Children, Adolescent and Their Families" project, which was one of the projects of Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, Finland. The purpose of this project was to develop new methods of counselling in health care and to chart what empowering counselling of children, adolescent and families with children was. Counselling and patient education are very important in health care, and everybody may benefit from of this project, but most of the benefits will go to children, young ones and families.
The purpose of our final project was to produce a guide for parents whose children receive a tracheostomy tube immediately
after birth. Moreover our guide was to help and support parents when their child has to stay in the hospital and to help the nursing staff to advice and support the parents. The guide was made in the collaboration with the paediatric hospital wards L1 and L2 of the Jorvi Hospital, Espoo, Finland.
Nowadays, fewer tracheostomy tubes are inserted, since the conditions that need tracheostomy have become more rare.
However, tracheostomies have not disappeared completely, only the reasons for tracheostomy have changed. Moreover,
medical conditions needing tracheostomy can be taken care of in different ways, and tracheostomy is always the last option.
This kind of guide has never been made for the parents whose baby has a tracheostomy tube and there were only a few
examinations or articles on this subject. This subject is, however, very important because the parents will face many
problems in these situations. For example, the attachment between the baby and the parents might be difficult to develope, since the parents may have strange and scary feelings. It will be hard when the baby has to stay in the hospital up to two years straight after birth and the parents do not get the baby home.
This guide was not meant to be a guide of nursing and health care of a baby with a tracheostomy tube. It givs psychical
support to the parents. It will remind them to take care of themselves and each other as well as other children in the family. It also helps the parents to cope with this difficult situation and deal with new stranges feelings.
