The European Union seeks carbon neutrality by 2050. One way to achieve this goal is the EU Taxonomy that will enter into force at the beginning of 2022. Its aim is to direct cash flows towards more sustainable investments. The EU Taxonomy will provide the criteria for which businesses’ activities are classified as contributing significantly to the six environmental objectives defined in the EU Taxonomy. Since the EU Taxonomy is still relatively new and there are still areas for interpretation, it is important that its introduction is made as simple and easy for companies as possible. Therefore, the aim of this thesis was to clarify the principles of the EU Taxonomy, its impact on the companies and how services can be built around it. The commissioner of the thesis was EcoReal Oy, which offers speacialist services for construction and real estate companies.
The study was conducted with three semi-structured interviews, which were analysed thematically. Based on a literature review and interviews, the outcome was a summary of the EU Taxonomy and an overview of its impacts on the activities of the companies. In addition, suggestions on how the EU Taxonomy can be productized and which steps should be considered by an expert company providing the service, were presented. The practical part of the study resulted in a productized service within the frames of the EU Taxonomy, containing three parts: a standard part, a modular part and a customized part. The recommendation is to offer these three as a single package, from which the customer company may choose to exclude parts. The standard part includes the company’s current EU Taxonomy consistency. In the modular part, the customer company receives suggestions on how it could improve its EU taxonomy performance through its own operations. The customized part offers a turnkey principle. It includes also the current services of EcoReal Oy, which enable the customer to improve its EU Taxonomy results.
It can be concluded that the EU Taxonomy refers to the uniform reporting of predefined environmental goals and a clear set of criteria for what the company’s activities are considered environmentally sustainable. In addition, the impact of the EU Taxonomy depends on the company’s current environmental awareness, whether the company is subject to the EU Taxonomy and its operational sector. Finally, the thesis therefore suggests that the service developed around the EU Taxonomy could serve as one additional sales channel for EcoReal Oy’s existing services.
