Nuorten mies-ten yleisin kuolinsyy on itsemurha.
The definition of suicide is ending your own life purposely or voluntarily. Sui-cides are common with adolescents especially among 20 to 24 years old, they are one of the most common reasons of death between 15 to 19 years old. The most common cause of death with young men is suicide. There are more suicide attempts among girls than boys whereas there are more deaths from suicide with boys than girls. Repeated severe suicidal thoughts have been ex-perienced by 10—15 per cent of adolescents in Finland and 3—5 per cent have tried to actually commit suicide. In 2009 there were 85 of under 25 years old who had ended their life. Among 15 to 25 years old youth 26 percent of all deaths were suicides.
The work was carried out as a descriptive literature review. The purpose of the thesis is to describe the prevention of suicides among young people and the aim is to increase knowledge about how young people can commit sui-cide. The research question was what are the ways to prevent youth suicide? A total of ten studies were selected for the literature review. The publications included in the review were analyzed by classification.
It can be concluded that in the prevention of suicides of adolescences it is very important to pay attention to the whole family. Multiprofessional coopera-tion, precautionary work, early interfering, and easy access to services are the crucial part.
We suggest that schools should include more teaching in mental health, sui-cides, and prevention. The subject is important, because it is expected that different mental health problems and side effects will increase amongst ado-lescents.
This thesis is beneficial for the students of health and social care, it can be used as teaching material for the courses nursing of children and youth as well as mental health and substance abuse nursing. This thesis benefits all staff members working with adolescents and all interested in the subject.
