Tiivistelmä
Corruption is one of the main obstacles to economic development at the country level. However, with the imperfection of the state institution, the basic economic laws and their impact on business development are distorted. Under these conditions, representatives of both bureaucracy and business often do not miss the opportunity to take advantage of the situation and use it for the benefit of their short-term interests at the micro level.
The aim of the thesis is to find out what drives companies operating in a highly corrupt environment at the micro level, how they assess the impact of corruption on the development of their business, and whether they continue to use the services of corruption. If a company wants to have a clean reputation, can it avoid corruption in its work, as an intermediary between its customers and representatives of government agencies? Using the answers to these questions obtained in the study, the author prepares recommendations for a case company that develops and approves projects at government agencies and represents the interests of clients who are not always ready to conduct “honest business”.
The study answers the following questions: Can corruption have an indirect positive impact on the development of a company? With the absolute understanding that corruption is a negative phenomenon, is it possible, how, and why? How can corruption best be avoided?
The knowledge base of the study consists of the theory framework about the influence of corruption on development and provides insights into the characteristics of corruption. The empirical part of the study was implemented with an interview and survey among the customers of the case company.
The topic is quite useful for business in general because corruption is a common phenomenon in today's world. Understanding how it affects the development of companies at the micro level will help to develop more effective methods for countering corruption at the macro level. Thus, if a company gains the necessary efficiency while working “without corruption”, it can thereby increase its stability and reliability in the market. The company will be a positive example of a sustainable business operating according to economic laws in environments with widespread corruption.
