The aim of the thesis was to design a museum product or product series and to make samples – the work having been commissioned by the Vanhalinna Museum in Lieto. The products had to meet the criteria set by the client, in terms of sustainability, functionality, affordability, locality and aesthetics suitable for museum trade.
The manufacturer of the finished museum product was the Kisälli sewing workshop – an employment service in Lieto – and the construction of the products had to be such, that they could be manufactured using only the resources available to the Kisälli workshop.
The research focused on the main building of the museum area, specifically the Mauno and Ester Vanhalinna manor house museum located there. The work focuses on “continuing the museum experience”; capturing the atmosphere of the museum and applying it to a product that the customer can buy from the museum shop before leaving. In situ observations and interviews were used as research methods.
Subsequently, samples of Vanhalinna museum products were created and will be made locally in the workshop. The products are both functional and affordable, designed to compliment the ambience and spirit of the museum. Sustainable development has been taken into account in their manufacture.
