The aim of this thesis is to describe how customers perceive the Viking Line's environ-mental efforts. The idea is to find out how important environmental issues are to the con-sumer and if they effectively control corporate involvement. The research has been limited only to Finnish customers. The research was made as a qualitative study using an in-terview with Viking Line's customers.
The theoretical framework consists of sustainable development, image and branding. The sources are based on Kotler, Middleton and Cooper. Main internet sites I have used is Reilun matkailun yhdistys and the National Environmental Management. The survey was conducted in spring 2014 in Helsinki.
The results showed that the company's environmental efforts have no influence in the se-lection of the company. It emerged that the biggest influence in the selection is the price. The results showed that environmental efforts are considered to be important to the con-sumer. It also appeared that the consumer's image of the company is relatively good and the company has a large proportion of satisfied customers. It turned out that the consumer is not satisfied that all of the information is only available on the company websites, they would like to read about it in newspapers and TV commercials.
