Tiivistelmä
The main focus of this thesis was to find out if a viable IoT system structure for following the hardness of concrete could be developed. The IoT system has three main parts. The server, the gateway and the remote device intended to be embedded into the concrete itself. My aim was to tackle the remote device of the IoT system. The device was designed from ground up and the project involved studying the correct components, programming the device, and designing the enclosure for the purpose of tracking the state of the concrete.

The design and development started from studying the different elements of a microcontroller board. The device does not require a high processing power, but it does need high efficiency. Thus, the principle was to develop a device with long battery life and wireless configuration. Our idea was to build a proprietary controller board, which eventually became too high-cost of an asset to be pursued at the moment. However, An examination of the controller circuit became useful for providing the proof of concept with off the shelf microcontrollers, since it produced a better understanding of microcontrollers as a whole.

The practical part of the study concentrated mainly on the development, building, and testing of the remote device. The practical study tried to answer the viability of the system and whether it was able to reduce the human intervention at construction sites.

The project resulted in an IoT system that was able to provide a good testing environment for later iterations to come. The remote device turned out to be an effective tool for gathering information to develop the whole system further.
