Tiivistelmä
Communication or interaction difficulties is a factor that hinders people with learning disabilities from quality care. This barrier has reduced understanding of their health issues leading to poorer quality of care and early mortality. The healthcare workers like nurses have a great role to promote the inclusion of people with learning disabilities and ensure their rights to quality care.

This thesis is functional in nature, having a product. The purpose of this thesis was to create educational material in a form of a digital book, for English language speaking nursing students of SAMK on how to interact with adults with learning disabilities using pictures. The objective was that the students will have knowledge of interaction methods with adults with learning disabilities using pictures and can enhance their skills as a nurse in this subject matter. In the process of the project, the authors also deepen their knowledge of the topic and gain adequate research skills to develop effective educational material.

The product is in the form of a digital book, which was created using Office 365 Sway. The book contains theoretical background, examples of pictures to support communication, and the application of pictures through a case study. Feedback was implemented to update and improve the quality of the book.

The agile project management method was employed in this project which allowed for the implementation of improvements according to the received feedback from the supervisor in different stages. The project was carried out in four phases, initiating, planning, executing, and closing.

The information provided in this thesis was sourced from reliable sources and has been cited per SAMK’s recommendation. Feedback questionnaires were sent to nursing students through email to evaluate the achievement of objectives. The product has been well evaluated by the target group on its usability and overall content.
